My name is Drew Herring and I am a 22-year-old sophomore at Johnston Community College where I am entered in the 2 + 2 engineering program. Some of my other hobbies are playing basketball, hunting, fishing, and video games. My passion for motor sports was sparked at an early age, with my racing career beginning in 1998 at the age of 10 in the Bandolero series at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. My Bandolero racing career spanned from 1998 to 2000 where I made 60 starts with 20 victories and 57 top 5 finishes.
In 2001, I moved up into the Allison Legacy ranks. There I made 11 starts, with 5 top 5 finishes and 7 top 10 finishes. In 2002, I made the leap into the late model stock series and finished 3rd in my first start. Since I was only 14 years old and NASCAR rules strictly stated that I had to be 16 years of age to race at a sanctioned track, I competed at Coastal Plains Raceway in Jacksonville, NC a non-sanctioned track run by NASCAR rules. During my first season we competed in 11 of the scheduled 12 races with 6 top 5 finishes and 10 top 10 finishes. We closed the season finishing 4th in the final points.
In 2003, I competed in 18 races at various tracks with 2 top 5 finishes, 10 top 10 finishes and 1 top 15 finish. The highlight of my 2003 season was making the Taco Bell 300 in my first attempt and running in the top 10 the whole race until being spun on the last lap going for 9th position. In 2004, I competed at Southern National Raceway Park after missing the first race. Later that year we qualified 15th out of 88 cars for the Bailey’s 300. On June 19th, 2004 I won my first race and won again the following weekend on June 26th. We completed the season with 10 top 5’s and 12 top 10 finishes.
In 2005, we had a turnaround season. We competed for the championship at South Boston Speedway competing in all 22 races, with 5 wins, 17 top 5’s, and 19 tops tens. We placed 2nd in the season’s final point standings in our first attempt to run a full season. Although the 2005 season was great it couldn’t compare to 2006.
In 2006, we competed again at South Boston Speedway looking for that elusive championship. We ran 17 races, winning 9 of the last 13 races. After winning five in a row the track management put a monetary bounty on my car. We finished the 2007 season in Victory Lane enabling us to win our first South Boston Speedway Track Championship.
In 2007, we switched things up and came closer to home to run at Southern National Raceway Park. There we competed in 29 races with 7 wins, 21 top 5’s, and 25 top 10’s. Combining those stats we were able to win both the regular season championship and the Championship series championship.
In 2008, we had a pretty good season with many new and exciting accomplishments. Racing in Pro Cup, I was able to win Rookie of the Year honors at the All American 200 at Rockingham Speedway. At the end of my 2008 Pro Cup season we finished with seven top 10 finishes in 13 races. We also logged a pair of top five’s including a career best second at Rockingham.
In 2009, we have already scored our first career Pro Cup win at the South Georgia Motorsports Park. We hope to keep the momentum going and our goal is to bring home the series championship for the BTS Tire & Wheel Distributors number 22 Ford Fusion race team.
